Ground Screw Load Capacity

Understanding how much load ground screws can support — what factors affect performance, how torque verification works and how Forti Nova ensures every installation meets the structural requirements of your project.

What Determines Ground Screw Load Capacity?

The load capacity of a ground screw is determined by several factors working together: the screw diameter, installed depth, soil type and soil density. Larger diameter screws driven deeper into denser soils carry higher loads — and every installation is different.

Installation torque can be recorded as part of the ground screw installation process. For a screw system with a documented and validated torque-to-capacity relationship, that data can contribute to assessment of the installed foundation alongside the screw geometry, soil conditions, design loads and any specified testing.

Torque should not be presented as a universal stand-alone proof of pile capacity. The structural designer or project specification determines the acceptance criteria and whether calculations, proof testing, load testing or other verification is required.

Factors Affecting Load Capacity

Screw Diameter

Larger diameter screws displace and compress more soil, increasing the contact area and load capacity of each pile. Our standard residential screws cover most garden room applications.

Installation Depth

Required depth depends on the screw system, ground profile and structural design. A deeper screw is not automatically higher capacity; the installed foundation must satisfy the project-specific design and acceptance criteria.

Soil Type & Density

Dense clay and compacted soils provide high resistance and load capacity. Sandy or loose soils may require deeper installation or larger screws to achieve the same capacity.

Helix Plate Configuration

The helical plate at the base of each screw anchors into the soil as the screw is installed. Plate size and configuration affect how the load is distributed into the surrounding ground.

Number of Screws

Load is distributed across all installed screws. A correctly designed screw layout ensures no individual pile is overloaded — our team calculates the correct number and spacing for your structure.

Installation Torque

Recorded installation torque may contribute to capacity assessment where the selected screw system has a validated correlation. Required action where acceptance criteria are not met is determined by the project design and engineer.

What Structures Can Ground Screws Support?

Ground screws can be designed for a wide range of residential and commercial structures. Suitability, screw size, quantity and spacing must be established from the structure, loads, ground conditions and selected system rather than assumed from the building type alone. Typical applications include:

Garden rooms & home offices
Steel frame garden rooms
Timber frame garden buildings
Decking structures
Modular buildings
Extensions & annexes
Commercial outbuildings
Playground equipment bases
Canopy & pergola structures

Project Documentation & Verification

The required verification route is agreed for the project. Installation records, structural calculations, testing and engineering documentation can be coordinated where specified, with the responsible party and deliverables confirmed before work proceeds.

Installation records where specified
Load calculations where required
Testing route agreed for the project
Engineering documentation coordinated where required

Frequently Asked Questions

What are ground screws used for?

Ground screws are steel foundations that are mechanically installed into the ground to support structures such as garden rooms, decking, modular buildings and extensions without the need for concrete foundations.

How much weight can ground screws support?

Load capacity depends on ground conditions and screw size, but properly installed ground screws can support substantial structural loads suitable for garden rooms, steel frames and modular buildings.

Are ground screws better than concrete?

Ground screws offer faster installation, minimal ground disturbance and load-bearing capability subject to the screw specification, ground conditions and any required verification compared to traditional concrete foundations.
