Ground Screw Foundations
Ground Screws for Garden Rooms, Decking & Modular Buildings — From £65 Installed
A modern alternative to concrete foundations for garden rooms, garden offices, decking structures and modular buildings. Installed hydraulically in hours — no excavation, no concrete curing, build-ready the same day. Supply only or full installation available.
Foundation System Explained
What Are Ground Screw Foundations?
Ground screws — also known as screw piles or helical piles — are a structural foundation system designed to support buildings without the need for traditional concrete bases. Each screw is manufactured from galvanised structural steel and installed into the ground using specialist hydraulic machinery.
The helical plate at the base of each screw anchors into the soil, creating a strong load-bearing foundation capable of supporting significant structural loads. Unlike concrete foundations, ground screws require no excavation, no formwork and no curing time — once installed, the foundations are immediately ready to build on.
Ground screws are widely used across Europe for modern modular construction and are rapidly becoming the preferred foundation system for garden rooms, decking structures and modular buildings across the UK.
Installed & Build-Ready Same Day
No excavation, no concrete pours, no curing time. Hydraulic installation in hours. Your structure can go up the same afternoon.
Minimal Environmental Impact
Lower embodied carbon than concrete. No site disruption. Preserves surrounding lawns, paving and habitats. Fully reversible.
Works on Sloping & Difficult Ground
Screws are installed to varying depths to create a perfectly level platform on any gradient — without expensive groundwork.
Programme Based on Site Conditions
A suitable ground screw design has no concrete curing stage, but weather, ground, access, plant and safety conditions still determine the installation window.
Engineering-Grade Load Capacity
Torque-verified on every single screw. Load calculations carried out before installation. Engineering certificate provided on completion.
Fully Removable & Relocatable
Changed your plans? Ground screws can be removed without breaking out concrete, leaving the site exactly as you found it.
Technical Explanation
How Ground Screw Foundations Work
Ground screws use a helical plate system that anchors into the surrounding soil as the screw is installed. As the screw is driven into the ground using hydraulic torque equipment, the helical plate compresses the soil around it — creating a stable, load-bearing foundation.
Every screw installed by Forti Nova is torque verified during installation. This means the resistance measured as the screw is driven confirms the actual load-bearing capacity of the pile — before construction begins. There is no guesswork.
Ground screws are commonly installed to depths of 800mm to 1250mm, depending on soil conditions and the structural load requirements of the building above. Larger screw diameters and deeper installation are available where required.
On completion, a torque verification report and engineering certificate is provided — confirming the foundation is suitable for the structure and providing documentation for building control where required.
Soil assessed & screw specified
Ground conditions are assessed and the correct screw diameter and length are selected for the load requirements.
Underground scanning completed
Cable avoidance tools and drain tracing are used to identify any underground utilities before installation begins.
Hydraulic torque installation
Each screw is driven into the ground using specialist hydraulic machinery — fast, accurate and non-disruptive.
Torque verified — every screw
Installation torque is recorded for every screw, confirming load capacity. Engineering certificate issued on completion.
Build-ready immediately
No curing time, no delays. Construction can begin on the same day as foundation installation.
Most Popular Application
Ground Screw Foundations for Garden Rooms
Ground screws are increasingly used as the preferred foundation system for modern garden rooms and garden offices. Traditional concrete bases require excavation, shuttering and curing time before construction can begin — ground screws eliminate these delays entirely.
Because screw positions are installed to precise locations, they align perfectly with the structural load points of steel frame garden room structures. Ground screws are frequently installed to support steel frame structures, allowing the foundation and frame to be coordinated precisely — one supplier, one engineered system.
Many modern garden room builds combine ground screw foundations with a steel frame structure, EPDM roofing and composite cladding — creating a complete modular building system installed in days rather than weeks.
- Foundations installed same day
- Precise alignment with steel frame load points
- No excavation or concrete required
- Complete system available from one supplier

Applications
What Ground Screw Foundations Are Used For
Ground screws are suitable for a wide range of residential and commercial projects where fast installation and minimal ground disturbance are required.
Garden Room Foundations
The most common application. Ground screws create a stable, level foundation for garden rooms and garden offices — without excavation, without concrete, without delays.
Decking Foundations
Ground screws eliminate the need for concrete pads on decking projects. Faster installation, precise levelling, minimal disruption to the garden.
Modular Buildings
Modular and prefabricated buildings frequently use screw pile foundations — they allow the structure to be installed quickly without major ground preparation.
Extensions & Outbuildings
Ground screws support lightweight extensions, annexes and outbuildings where traditional strip foundations may not be required.
Ground Screws vs Concrete Foundations
When planning a garden room or modular building, compare ground screws and concrete against the same loads, ground information, access, programme, verification and whole-project scope. There is no universal winner.
| Feature | Ground Screws (Forti Nova) | Concrete Foundations |
|---|---|---|
| Installation programme | Confirmed after design and site checks | Includes excavation, placement and specified cure stage |
| Excavation | May be reduced on a suitable unobstructed site | Normally part of the foundation method |
| Concrete curing | No concrete curing stage | Cure requirements follow the concrete specification |
| Ground disturbance | Depends on access, obstructions and installation method | Includes excavation, spoil handling and reinstatement |
| End-of-life removal | Feasibility depends on the installed system and site | Removal normally requires breaking and excavation |
| Build start | After installation, verification and sign-off | After the specified cure and sign-off |
| Sloping ground | Requires a measured layout and engineered connections | Requires designed levels, excavation and formwork |
| Engineering responsibility | Must be stated with records and assumptions | Must be stated with records and assumptions |
| Environmental comparison | Assess steel, transport, plant and end-of-life route | Assess concrete, reinforcement, transport and spoil |
| Weather and access | Depends on ground, plant, access and safe conditions | Depends on pour specification, access and safe conditions |

Alternative to Concrete
Garden Room Foundations Without Concrete
Many homeowners now look for garden room foundations without concrete — particularly where site access is limited, existing landscaping needs to be preserved, or where a faster build is required.
Ground screw foundations provide a practical solution, allowing foundations to be installed quickly without digging, pouring concrete, or waiting for it to cure. The site is left largely undisturbed, with minimal impact on surrounding lawns, paving or planting.
Screw pile foundations are ideal for:
Why Avoid Concrete?
Curing takes days
Concrete requires 24–48 hours minimum before load can be applied — longer in cold weather. Ground screws: build immediately.
Excavation damages the garden
Concrete bases require significant excavation. Ground screws leave the surrounding garden intact.
Concrete is permanent
Once poured, concrete is extremely difficult and costly to remove. Ground screws can be extracted cleanly.
Concrete needs specialist groundwork
Pouring a correct concrete base requires shuttering, compaction and often a specialist groundwork contractor. Ground screws are self-contained.
